<p>Class Definition</p> <p>GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: As assigned, to serve as Deputy Assistant Director at the Adult Correctional Institutions in such a capacity, to assist the Assistant Director in the administration of the State's Adult Correctional system by managing the custodial and correctional services of the institutions under the general supervision of the Assistant Director.</p> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director with considerable latitude for the exercise of judgement in the management of the custodial and correctional activities of the Adult Correctional Institutions; work is reviewed for soundness of judgement and for result obtained.</p> <p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, organizes and supervises the work of the staff of the Adult Correctional Institutions; gives general and specific instructions to Associate Deputy Directors and supervisors and reviews work of the staff through report, conferences, and inspections.</p> <p>Illustrative Examples of Work Performed</p> <ul> <li>As assigned, to serve as Deputy Assistant Director at the Adult Correctional Institutions in such a capacity, to assist the Assistant Director in the administration of the State's Adult Correctional system by managing the custodial and correctional services of the institutions under the supervision of the Assistant Director; in the absence of the Assistant Director, to exercise the duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director. </li><li>To review and evaluate such custodial and correctional activities as: Work assignments and posts for the staff on all shifts; relief and leave schedules; safety practices, security procedures and disciplinary control measures; plans for emergencies such as escapes and riots; plans for detention of inmates and the security of the institution; plans for the control of contraband; and plans for inmate training and rehabilitation. </li><li>To take such action as is necessary to improve the effectiveness of such activities. </li><li>To review and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs for the custodial staff and to make recommendations thereon. </li><li>To recommend to the Assistant Director rules and regulations to assure the security of the institution. </li><li>To make frequent inspections of the institution to determine compliance with all rules and regulations. </li><li>To be responsible for the security, safe handling quantity and quality of firearms and ammunition. </li><li>To constantly evaluate and reevaluate the inmate population as to security risks to themselves and to the total institution population from a custodial viewpoint and to make findings known promptly to the Assistant Director. </li><li>To be responsible for handling difficult problems presented by inmates or correctional officers and to take the necessary steps to resolve such problems. </li><li>To be responsible for providing leadership and for taking positive action to quell and suppress any riotous rebellious or other type of individual or group action which is contrary to the rules and regulations of the Assistant Director. </li><li>To do related work as required. </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications for Appointment</p> <p>KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques of adult correctional and custodial work; a working knowledge of, and skill in the use of firearms and other protective weapons; a working knowledge of and skill in physical defense techniques; the ability to plan, organize and review the work of correctional officers and other personnel on all shifts in the adult correctional institution; the ability to review and evaluate the institution's custodial and correctional activities and to take such action as is necessary to improve the effectiveness of such activities; the ability to provide leadership and to take such action as is necessary to improve the effectiveness of such activities; the ability to provide leadership and to take positive action to quell or suppress any riotous, rebellious or other type of individual or group action; the ability to handle difficult inmate problem cases; the ability to exercise good judgement in recognizing and dealing with the personal, emotions and adjustment problems of inmates under varying conditions; and related capacities and abilities.</p> <p>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:</p> <p>Education: Such as may have been gained through possession of a bachelor's degree from a recognized institution of higher learning in law enforcement, criminal justice with a concentration in corrections.</p> <p>Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment in an administrative position in a public or private agency involving correctional, rehabilitative or adult service programs.</p> <p>Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.</p> <p>Supplemental Information</p> <p>The Warden provides support to the staff, inmates, non-unformed staff, and to the Assistant Director of Institutions and Operations. The Warden oversees security issues and manages all correctional services of the institutions under the general supervision of the Assistant Director.</p> <p>3+ years of direct responsibilities in the administration of a correctional facility or unit preferred. 5+ years of supervisory experience within a state or federal facility preferred.</p> <p>For information regarding the benefits available to State of Rhode Island employees, please visit the Office of Employee Benefits' website at http://www.employeebenefits.ri.gov/.</p> <p>Also, be advised that a new provision in RI General Law 35-6-1 was enacted requiring direct deposit for all employees.
