This position is responsible for performing skilled maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work on trucks, tractors, fire apparatus, heavy construction equipment, generators, and specialized automotive equipment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.</p> <p>Responsibilities:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on a wide range of airport vehicles and equipment, including diesel and electric transit buses, trucks, cars, and airport-specific machinery.</p> </li><li> <p>Rebuild and replace components according to manufacturer specifications, including fabrication, machining, and custom part design as required.</p> </li><li> <p>Conduct thorough preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity of airport equipment.</p> </li><li> <p>Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues efficiently.</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborate with fellow technicians to foster a team-oriented work environment and share expertise.</p> </li><li> <p>Serve as a liaison between the equipment shop and internal stakeholders, providing updates on repair status, requirements, and equipment availability.</p> </li><li> <p>Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints professionally and promptly.</p> </li><li> <p>Research and procure the correct parts and components needed for repairs and maintenance.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain detailed work order documentation, ensuring accurate records of diagnostics, repairs, and status updates.</p> </li></ol> <p>Education & Experience:</p> <ul> <li>High school diploma or GED with a minimum of three (3) years of experience, OR at least five (5) years of relevant experience without a diploma. </li><li>An equivalent combination of education, military, or industry-specific experience may be considered. </li><li>Post-secondary education in a related technical field is preferred. </li><li>ASE certifications and certification for A/C refrigerant dispensing and recovery are highly desirable. </li><li>Experience with gasoline, diesel, and battery-electric high-voltage drivetrain systems is strongly preferred. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>Extensive knowledge of diagnostics, repair techniques, and maintenance for a wide range of heavy equipment and vehicles. </li><li>Strong understanding of engine operating principles, mechanical systems, and automotive electrical components. </li><li>Familiarity with safe working practices, hazard communication standards, and regulatory compliance. </li><li>Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues independently. </li><li>Proficiency in shop mathematics to support fabrication and repairs. </li><li>Strong record-keeping and documentation skills, including the ability to prepare and maintain work logs and reports. </li><li>Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members, leadership, and customers. </li><li>High level of skill in using and maintaining specialized tools, equipment, and materials related to automotive and heavy equipment repair. </li><li>Computer literacy is required, with the ability to navigate diagnostic software and work order management systems. </li></ul> <p>This role requires a dedicated professional with a strong technical background, a commitment to safety and efficiency, and the ability to adapt to evolving automotive technologies.</p> <p>Physical Requirements:</p> <p>This is a physically active job requiring manual dexterity, physical strength and the ability to lift 50 lbs. without assistance, and the ability to manipulate heavier weights up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Physical activity may include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Exposure to noise, heat, dust, cold, fumes, uneven surfaces, chemical substances likely, and adverse weather conditions.</p> <p>Sensory Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Vision (near, distance, peripheral) </li><li>Depth perception </li><li>Touch </li><li>Hearing </li></ul> <p>General Information:</p> <ul> <li>Required, Valid Class B CDL driver's license with passenger endorsement. If candidate does not have CDL, CLT Airport will provide training. Candidate will have one year to obtain CDL from the date training begins. </li><li>Certain convictions within a 10-year period would prevent unescorted access and therefore deny employment. </li><li>Vehicle Maintenance Facility offers heated and cooled work area with good lighting and other facility amenities </li></ul> <p>CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT</p> <p>The City's Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.</p> <p>Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate's written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.</p> <p>Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination.
