<p>JOB DESCRIPTION</p> <p>Newberry College invites applications for a Director of Athletic Bands to provide artistic, administrative, and educational leadership for the College's athletic band program. The Director of Athletic Bands is responsible for directing the Scarlet Spirit Marching Band and Scar's Army Pep Band, supporting the mission of the Department of Music, and contributing significantly to student recruitment for both the marching band program and the Department of Music. The position works collaboratively with the Director of Bands to ensure alignment between athletic bands, concert ensembles, and the broader curricular and co-curricular goals of the department.</p> <p>The successful candidate will be a dynamic educator and conductor who values student-centered learning, collaborative leadership, and community engagement, and who can build an energetic and inclusive athletic band culture that supports Newberry College athletics and campus life. Application deadline is March 15, 2026.</p> <p>JOB FUNCTIONS:</p> <p>Athletic Band Leadership</p> <ol> <li> <p>Direct and manage the Scarlet Spirit Marching Band, including summer band camp, rehearsals, performances, and game-day operations.</p> </li><li> <p>Direct the Scar's Army Pep Band for men's and women's basketball and other athletic and campus events as assigned.</p> </li><li> <p>Select and program music appropriate for athletic venues and institutional traditions.</p> </li><li> <p>Coordinate all logistical aspects of athletic band activities, including scheduling, travel, equipment, uniforms, and facility usage.</p> </li><li> <p>Recruit, train, and supervise student leaders (e.g., drum majors, section leaders).</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborate with Athletics, Spirit Groups, and Campus Life to enhance school spirit and student engagement.</p> </li></ol> <p>Recruitment and Enrollment Support</p> <ol> <li> <p>Lead recruitment efforts for the marching band, including outreach to high schools, band directors, prospective students, and families.</p> </li><li> <p>Support recruitment for the Department of Music by identifying and encouraging prospective music majors and minors through athletic bank participation.</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in admissions events, campus visits, open houses, and recruitment days.</p> </li><li> <p>Build and maintain positive relationships with regional band directors and music educators.</p> </li></ol> <p>Administration and Service</p> <ol> <li> <p>Manage the athletic band budget in coordination with the Department Chair and Division leadership.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversee the care, inventory, and maintenance of equipment, uniforms, and music library resources in collaboration with the Director of Bands.</p> </li><li> <p>Ensure compliance with institutional policies and safety procedures.</p> </li><li> <p>Support the mission and values of Newberry College.</p> </li></ol> <p>EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION</p> <p>Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience directing marching bands and/or athletic pep bands at the high school or collegiate level. Strong conducting, rehearsal, organizational, and leadership skills. Experience or demonstrated ability in student recruitment and outreach. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <p>Master's degree in Music, Music Education, or a closely related field. Experience writing marching band drill.
