Come join us, apply today!</p> <p>Under specified supervision, performs routine and skilled work in the daily operation of facilities, inspection, maintenance and repair, equipment, and structures of the city of Thornton's raw water system.</p> <p> </p> <p>Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled internally by advancement from level I to level II, and when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.</p> <p> </p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator I:</p> <p>Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level class in the Raw Water Supply Operator series. Incumbents are not required to have directly related work experience. Work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. Instruction or changes in procedures or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as required.</p> <p> </p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator II:</p> <p>Under general supervision, this is the journey-level class in the Raw Water Supply Operator series. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform the full range of duties and to work with considerable independence and initiative.</p> <p>(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)</p> <p> </p> <p>Performs daily duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of the City's raw water system.</p> <p> </p> <p>Repairs and maintains headgates, dams and pipelines. Installs and maintains flumes, meters and gauges; constructs new ditches. Records readings from flow charts, clocks, meters, and gauges. Compiles readings into routine operational reports and performs routine mathematical calculations.</p> <p> </p> <p>Patrols and inspects ditch system facilities for damage, leaks, vandalism or other needed repairs.</p> <p> </p> <p>Performs a variety of grounds maintenance work, including cutting weeds and clearing debris, brush, trees and tree limbs from ditches, ditch banks and reservoir areas.</p> <p> </p> <p>Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on facilities, equipment machinery, and raw water system.</p> <p> </p> <p>Participates in the installation of material, equipment, and system changes; performs field inspections, coordinates contractor service work; operates related computerized controls and monitoring equipment; maintains records of daily operations, maintenance, and repairs.</p> <p> </p> <p>Operates vehicles used in construction and maintenance such as mowing tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, boom trucks, excavators, snowplows, and other related equipment.</p> <p> </p> <p>Operates air compressor and pneumatic air tools, chain saws, bush cutters, concrete saws, and pressure power washers. Uses hand tools, including wheelbarrows, rakes and rollers. Performs minor, routine maintenance and inspections on equipment.</p> <p> </p> <p>Provides customer service as needed and reports problems to supervisor.</p> <p> </p> <p>May be required to be on 24-hour on-call status for snow removal and other emergencies.</p> <p> </p> <p>May perform work that requires the use of specified respiratory equipment that guards against exposure to airborne hazards. Complies with all Municipal, State, and Federal physical requirements as per Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) guidelines.</p> <p> </p> <p>May be required to work overtime.</p> <p> </p> <p>Performs other duties as assigned.</p> <p>Education/Experience:</p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator I:</p> <p>High School diploma or GED.</p> <p> </p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator II:</p> <p>High School diploma or GED; one year of progressively responsible experience performing field maintenance duties. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.</p> <p>Licensing/Certification Requirements:</p> <p>Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months, a Class "B" CDL following the completion of no more than 120 hours of training as provided by the City.</p> <p> </p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator II:</p> <p>Class 1 Water Distribution System Operator Certificate is required.</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:</p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator I:</p> <p>Knowledge of laws and safety as it relates to vehicle operations, general construction tools and equipment.</p> <p>Skill in operating all assigned equipment, machinery, and tools in a safe and appropriate manner.</p> <p>Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.</p> <p>Ability to successfully complete all medical and fit testing as required for the use of personal protective respiratory equipment.</p> <p>Ability to follow instructions given verbally or in writing.</p> <p>Ability to consistently follow safety instructions.</p> <p>Ability to listen well and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with various audiences.</p> <p>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, other agencies, and the general public.</p> <p> </p> <p>Raw Water Supply Operator II:</p> <p>In addition to previous requirements:</p> <p>Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.</p> <p>Knowledge of the uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.</p> <p>Knowledge of the techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of objects and facilities.</p> <p>Knowledge of the purpose, projects, organization, and employee responsibilities of the department.</p> <p>Knowledge of the functions of water measurement flumes, meters, instruments, and related fixtures.</p> <p>Skill in safe work methods and applying safety regulations pertaining to work.</p> <p>Ability to successfully complete all medical and fit testing as required for the use of personal protective respiratory equipment.</p> <p>Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computer and job-related computer applications including electronic mail.</p> <p>Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and maps.</p> <p>Ability to read and interpret City streets signs and maps.</p> <p>Ability to operate in a safe and proper manner, all assigned equipment, machinery, tools and vehicles, including but not limited to dump truck, boom truck, forklift, snow plow, mowing tractor, cutting torch, plasma cutter, drill press, lathe machine, chain saw, and jackhammer.</p> <p>Physical and Mental Requirements:</p> <p>While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. The employee is subject to both inside and outside conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and close quarters.</p> <p>Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.</p> <p> </p> <p>Your application will be used as a screening tool.
