The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City's evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Department currently manages a growing portfolio of active grants that require ongoing, detailed oversight to remain compliant with funder requirements and ensure successful program delivery. While internal program teams lead day-to-day activities, the absence of additional support staff creates gaps in coordination and management of the grants.

As a result, the Grants Unit is seeking an intern to help provide support for the coordination and management of grants. This role would be responsible for monitoring grant timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements; coordinating with internal stakeholders; and serving as a primary point of contact for funders. Having this Grants Unit intern would reduce the risk of missed deadlines and compliance issues which could have significant financial and reputational impact on the Department.

With increasing grant activity and complex reporting requirements, the Grants Unit intern will provide essential support in research, proposal preparation, compliance monitoring, and reporting. The intern would also help to provide support services related to the grant management process, improve documentation, and ensure that programmatic and financial reporting aligns with funder expectations. This additional staffing would support successful grant outcomes, improve funder relationships, and position the Department more competitively for future funding opportunities.

Under the supervision of the Grants Director, the intern will support the Grants Unit in the following areas:

Grant Development and Submission

Research and identify federal, state, local, and private grant opportunities aligned

with organizational goals.

Coordinate and help to prepare high-quality grant proposals, applications, and supporting

documentation.

Ensure all submissions meet funder guidelines and deadlines.

Grant Management and Compliance

Monitor grant implementation plans with funding regulations, contractual requirements,

and reporting schedules.

Track expenditures, deliverables, and performance outcomes in coordination with

finance and program teams.

Maintain accurate grant files and documentation.

Reporting and Evaluation

Collect and analyze data to demonstrate impact.

Monitor grant performance, expenditures, and outcomes.

Collaboration and Communication

Support internal planning efforts and cross-departmental coordination related to funded

initiatives.

Continuous Improvement

Develop and maintain grants calendar and tracking systems.

Identify opportunities to strengthen grant processes, compliance, and reporting

efficiency.

Learning Opportunities:

The intern will gain hands-on experience in the full grant lifecycle, including:

Exposure to federal, state, and private funding mechanisms and compliance requirements.

Experience with proposal development, budgeting, and timeline planning.

Knowledge of reporting, evaluation, and data analysis to demonstrate program impact.

Professional development in project management, technical writing, and administrative

organization within a government agency.

SUMMER COLLEGE INTERN - 10234

Minimum Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

As a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs. For more information, please visit the U.S. Department of Education's website at https://studentaid.gov/pslf/.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
