<p>Job Responsibilities</p> <p>(Orangeburg Construction) Plans, supervises, and performs inspection work in all phases of highway and bridge construction projects. Conducts sampling and field tests on all projects. Takes samples and/or supervises others in sampling materials used by the contractor to ensure that all is in accordance with specifications. Makes recommendations regarding sample results. Ensures compliance with plans and specifications for both state and federal projects. Manages and verifies survey data on projects as necessary. Serves as Project Engineer on major highway and bridge construction projects. Performs miscellaneous tasks, but not limited to checking complaints, nighttime traffic control inspections, inspecting erosion control, reviewing erosion control plans, DHEC permits, etc. Ensures that contractor complies with all erosion control and traffic control plans on all construction projects. Prepares daily diaries, weekly and monthly reports, monthly and final construction estimates, and final plans on construction projects. Performs computer work as necessary to perform these assigned tasks. Reviews reports, estimates, and final plans produced by subordinates. Assists in the coordinating of all work performed by utility companies for relocation of water, sewer, natural gas, electricity, fiber optic communications, cable television, etc. Maintains utility diaries on complex projects and coordinates utility relocation work with contractor and project plans. Assists the Resident Construction Engineer with office management tasks, including daily coordination of office human resources, maintenance of fixed assets such as pool vehicles, inspection and surveying equipment, office equipment and computers. Supervises staff to include preparing performance planning and evaluations documents and related personnel paperwork. Coaches, counsels, and trains employees. Trains office staff in construction surveying and staking and in the proper use and maintenance of surveying instruments and equipment. Serves as the department representative when dealing with the general public, contractor personnel, utility company representatives, city and county officials, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.</p> <p>Minimum and Additional Requirements</p> <p>A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and one (1) year of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.</p> <p>The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
