Maimonides is an affiliate of Northwell Health and a major clinical training site for SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. Overview Performs all clerical, analytical and accounting tasks required to generate bills to third parties and patients in order to collect funds for services provided to patients. Responsibilities Establishes a patient's account by completing the required fields in the Data Processing System from source reports. Enters demographic information, converts diagnosis, procedures, insurance information, etc. into the required codes. Checks the accuracy of third party insurance forms (Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross, commercial insurance etc.); bills third party manually when required. Handles third party denials, rebilling when necessary. Processes third party and patient payments; analyzes or breaks down payments for posting; prepares daily cash control sheets and reconciles for bank deposits. Reviews details of coverage (including requesting medical records and filing correspondence) to ensure proper third party or patient is billed. Corrects reject reasons and/or changes financial class as needed. Follows up on open accounts and adjusts balances so they are accurate; refers accounts to collection agencies and initiates refunds if applicable. Keeps track of payments after accounts are billed to third parties and/or collection agencies. Analyzes, verifies and corrects charges on all accounts. Ascertains that dunning cycles and bills to patients are accurate and are transmitted on a timely basis. Prepares special reports (e.g., transportation, Hill-Burton logs) confirming that required documentation is on file. Advises supervisor of any backlogs or deficiencies noted in the "capturing charges billing-payment" cycle on Accounts Receivables. Performs accounting procedures required to assure that patient account balances are accurate (e.g., checks that the difference between charges and reimbursements (i.e., allowances) are accurate). Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Qualifications Education: High School graduation or equivalent required. Experience: Must have one of the following: At least 6 months previous billing experience or other related finance experience (i.e. Teller, Bookkeeper, Cashier with responsibility of Hospital Receivable posting); or Knowledge of hospital or physician billing via successful completion of a course in the subject; or Successful completion of a college course in Business or Accounting. Skills: Typing: 20 wpm (tested). Must pass basic math skills test. Must pass basic data entry skills test. Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position; knowledge of a second language preferred. Pay Range USD $28.60 - USD $29.17 /Hr.
